The international division of labour in regard to knowledge-intensive activities is progressing extremely dynamically. In 2017, the present trend study “Globalisation and Shift Tendencies in R&D Activities” under the auspices of the Hans Böckler Foundation and the IG Metall trade union examined the current state of globalisation of R&D activities and the driving motives and strategies behind it on the basis of expert interviews and data from the Stifterverband.

The two ILIN scientists Steffen Kinkel and Ralph Lichtner found out that the increasing R&D commitment of German industry abroad also stimulates domestic R&D activities. Important future topics such as Industry 4.0 and the necessary software development are still firmly anchored in Germany.
